Watch and Learn

Personal Development

Earlier I mentioned that ‘you are what you watch’ and so I thought it would be fun to share with you a few of my favourite marketing shows.

I am entertained when I’m challenged and the shows that have subject matter, or characters, that I can identify with or learn something from are what I truly enjoy watching. When I am exposed to the inner workings of a marketing decision, either good or bad, my curiosity is piqued and my brain is engaged. When I’m watching a movie or television program that has a marketing-related plot I get excited!

Here’s my top five marketing movies and TV shows:

  1. Mad Men. Though the depravity of the characters is off-colour I find it to be very authentic and highly entertaining. And besides, I like to think of Abbotsford as the Madison Avenue of the Fraser Valley☺
  2. Shark Tank (and Dragon’s Den). I love watching great business ideas get the attention they deserve; I especially love seeing an inspired, and scalable business model receive game-changing investment – it’s very exciting! And yes, seeing the half-baked business get squashed is also fun.
  3. What Women Want. No, it’s not a chic-flick… it’s a comedic tale of how someone gets in touch with their target audience. Besides, Mel Gibson in panty hose is funny stuff. Ok I admit…I may have to give up my “man card” on this one.
  4. Wag the Dog. Public relations is a big part of a successful and wide-reaching marketing campaign and this movie shows a PR spin at the highest level. Besides, watching this movie makes me feel like a grown up. Wild stuff, a true classic.
  5. Jobs (Steve Jobs). Since his passing we’ve learned a lot about this innovator and this movie (the book was much deeper and better) showcases just how his passion for the product shaped every decision he made. As a result he changed the face of digital devices and electronic consumption. Knowing at the deepest level what his audience needed and wanted, and how to sell it with sizzle, made his legacy what it is today. Without him I’d probably still be jogging with my big, yellow, Sony cassette deck.

So… what’s your favourite TV show or movie? And dare I ask… why? Let me know onFacebook or Twitter – I’d love to hear from you.
